Carol Shelton Wines
Monday, July 5th, 2010We are pleased to welcome Carol Shelton and Mitch Mackenzie of Carol Shelton Wines to Seattle. They will be here all week showing Carol’s excellent Zinfandels.
Carol has been making wine for over 30 years, and currently specializes in single vineyard and site specific Zinfandels. During her time at UC Davis she did research on the effect different yeast strains have on the resultant flavor of the wine. This research is still referenced by many top wine makers who wish to get the maximum potential out of their grapes and vineyard. In 2000 she founded Carol Shelton Wines with her husband Mitch Mackenzie.
The Monga Zinfandel is from The Lopez Vineyard in Cucamonga Valley, and exhibits big cherry flavors with a spicy caramel oak presence.
The Wild Thing Zinfandel is certified CCOF organically grown from Mendocino County. Uninoculated yeast fermentation (Wild yeast) is used to create this wine and give it the extra soft layers of complexity. Hence “Wild Thing.”
The Rocky Reserve Zinfandel is from Rockpile in Dry Creek Valley. It is a bigger more structured Zinfandel and was awarded 91 points by The Wine Spectator.
The Karma Zinfandel is from the Russian River Valley and benefits from a cooler climate which allows for a longer growing period. These grapes were not harvested until the first week of November, and yet had less potential alcohol (25 brix or about 14.5% potential alcohol) than most Zinfandels harvested a full month earlier.
